What affects an incubator price

The main thing that drives an incubator price is capacity: more eggs per batch means a bigger cabinet, more trays, a stronger turning motor and more heating. What should not change between price points is the core control system. Every IncubatorPro model, from the cheapest to the most expensive, has automatic turning and digital temperature and humidity control.

Watch out for very cheap chicken incubators that turn eggs by hand or use an analogue thermostat. They cost less on day one but lose far more eggs over a year.

Cost per egg: bigger machines are cheaper per egg

Divide the price by the capacity and the larger machines work out much cheaper per egg space. The 360-egg model costs about R24 per egg space, while the 20,000-egg machine is closer to R6. If you can fill it, a bigger incubator pays for itself faster.

New incubator vs second-hand

A second-hand incubator can look cheaper, but you usually get no warranty, no training and no way to know how accurate the thermostat still is. A new incubator with a 2-year warranty protects the eggs you put in it, and the eggs are worth more than the machine over its lifetime.
