Planning a chicken hatchery

A hatchery lives or dies on three numbers: how many fertile eggs you can source each week, how many day-old chicks you can sell, and your hatch rate. Size the hatchery machine to the eggs you can reliably buy or produce. It is better to run a 5,280-egg machine full every batch than a 10,000-egg machine half full.

With a 21-day cycle, one machine gives you roughly 17 batches a year. A 5,280-egg incubator can therefore set more than 85,000 eggs a year.

Hatchery equipment you will need

• Hatcher: the same machine or a second one for the last three days.
• Egg trays: for storing and moving eggs. See our egg trays.
• Chick feeders and drinkers: for chicks you keep. See chicken feeders and poultry drinkers.
• Backup power: recommended for any commercial hatchery.
