Price per egg: bigger machines cost less per chick

Divide the price by the number of eggs per batch:

• 360 eggs: about R24 per egg space
• 1,056 eggs: about R14 per egg space
• 2,000 eggs: about R10 per egg space
• 20,000 eggs: about R6 per egg space

Because a chicken batch takes 21 days, each egg space is used about 17 times a year, so the machine cost per chick hatched falls quickly over the first year.

Why a cheaper chicken incubator can cost more

A low-priced manual or still-air incubator saves money upfront but usually hatches fewer chicks: eggs at the edges run cooler, turning is easy to forget, and there is often no local support when a part fails.
